Local Transportation in Panama
Panama has a totally first-world air-transportation infrastructure with almost all international flights entering thru the Panamá City airport (airport code PTY), at Tocumén. Tocumén is 17 miles (27 kms) northeast of the city and takes between 30 and 60 minutes to reach.
Smaller airports for internal flights are Aeropuerto Marcos A Gelabert in the Albrook section of Panama City serving interior flights and flights to the Pearl Islands and Enrique Malek in David, ChiriquÃ.
Taxis
Taxis may be hired at perhaps $15-$20 per hour, and make for a good, inexpensive way to travel. Use radio-dispatched taxis or hotel-provided taxis and agree on a price before setting off.
Busses
Panama does not have a commuter train system, but a terrific bus system connects most major cities in Panama. Buses for all points in the country leave either from the terminal near Aeropuerto Marcos A Gelabert or from the Albrook Mall.
Roads & Car Rental
Driving conditions in Panama have improved tremendously over the last several years. Renting a car is a good way to get around and all airports offer the same car rental agencies you're used to, however we recommend renting from the agency's city locations and not from the airport. If all you need is a ride from the airport to your town, taxis or hotel shuttles offer the same convenience as in other countries. Once in town, especially smaller towns, many people walk, but taxis and bus-services are available. And a rental car is especially useful for getting out of town for a day.
